Election Candidates
President-Elect Candidate Mr. Hugo Hernández
Hugo Hernández immigrated to the United States at the age of seven. As the youngest of six siblings, he became the first in his family to go to college. His early years were dedicated to seasonal work as a migrant worker across Texas, New Mexico, and Wisconsin. His academic journey led him to the University of Texas in San Antonio, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts (BA) and a Master of Arts (MA) in Bicultural Bilingual Studies. Additionally, he completed language programs at La Complutense de Madrid and the Sorbonne University in Paris.
Experience, when combined with passion and knowledge, holds immense value. Hugo's background includes his initial role as a student intern for the National Association for Bilingual Education (NABE) in Washington, DC. Notably, nearly 25 years ago, he was the first student representative to be appointed to the TABE board. His dedicated journey with TABE has encompassed a diverse range of responsibilities, from serving as Parliamentarian and Parent Representative to acting as Treasurer, Vice President, and most recently, taking on the crucial role of Legislative Chair. These multifaceted roles have not only enriched his experience as a servant leader but have also deepened his understanding of the organization's operations and the strategies needed to advance its mission. Notably, Hugorecently had the privilege of delivering a compelling presentation on the History of Bilingual Education in Texas at an international conference in Sheffield, England.
As someone who lives by his convictions, Hugo's three daughters are a product of Dual Language programs. Thanks to this enriching experience, they are bicultural, bilingual, and biliterate. His family serves as a testament that bilingual education works. His premise is simple: “What I want for my daughters is what I desire for all students in Texas. I hope all students can embrace the gift of language; bilingualism is a superpower.”
At the state level, Hugo has actively participated in committees sponsored by the Texas Education Agency (TEA) aimed at promoting the advancement of emergent bilinguals. He has supported Bilingual Education Student Organizations (BESO) students, organized sessions for Texas parents, has worked to ensure the organization’s finances are sound and healthy and recently has joined efforts to advocate for key legislation at the Texas Capitol.
With Texas leading the nation in emergent bilingual students, TABE has a historic opportunity to promote the advancement of culturally and linguistically diverse students. I am running for this position because I wholeheartedly believe in the work that has been accomplished and recognize the significance of the tasks that lie ahead. I am committed, and I intend to continue advancing the organization's vision: To be the premier state organization in Bilingual Education. Every Child Bilingüe! Together, we can continue elevating TABE to new heights. I hope to gain your trust and humbly ask for your support through your vote.
Currently, Hugo resides in San Antonio with his family, which includes his wife, two daughters, and a Chihuahua with special needs named Masha.
¡Dios los bendiga!
